Character Name: Finn Mertens
Character Age: 16
Canon: Adventure Time
Canon Point: Season 9 Episode 13, "Whispers"
History/World: Adventure Time Wiki
Personality:
Finn is generally your archetypal white knight, falling somewhere in the vicinity of Neutral Good. His explicitly stated mission in life is to help people with their problems, “no matter how small.” And he is quite helpful to a large number of people, making him one of the most popular guys in all of Ooo. He’s sensitive to the needs of those around him and generous with his time, energy and resources. He’ll do just about anything asked of him and give even his favorite things to anyone who seems to need it more than him. The only limit to his generosity is what’s right in front of him- he doesn’t usually go out actively looking to give away all his belongings.
He’s incredibly supportive of the people in his life even when he’s competing with them. Unless it has special significance to him he’ll even take a dive to spare someone’s feelings. He ends up going along with a lot of plans that he doesn’t understand or doesn’t agree with, especially ones Jake came up with. Jake comes up with a lot of bad plans. But if his friends need him he’ll be there, always, every step of the way. He especially encourages creativity in others and doesn’t mind getting roped into performances that are actually terrible. He even plays along with BMO in the most absurd fantasies, at least up to the point that BMO becomes destructive or genuinely concerning.
He’s well liked enough and had enough actual success in his life to justify his confidence and pride, though at times he can become overly confident. The drawback is that he takes failure hard, even when he isn’t at fault. He considers himself the defender of Ooo, and if something happens when he could have been there but wasn’t he feels that it’s his fault. It’s understandable, though, as most of the time he is there. He’s incredibly brave, especially considering his age, and is the type to run headlong into danger at every opportunity.
He isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, but he isn’t quite the dullest either. He’s mostly very trusting- or rather, gullible. It takes very little to fool him, especially when it comes to disguises. The only people he doesn’t trust implicitly are those who have made themselves his enemy. For anyone else, strangers included, he takes people at their word. Even his enemies can generally fool him with just the slightest bit of effort.
On the other hand, he’s reasonably street-smart. He has a varied pool of experiences from which to draw and tend to have a good sense of what is a reasonable plan and what isn’t. He’s had very little formal education, but picks things up from the smarter people around him and retains the knowledge fairly well. Luckily most of those people are honest, because his gullibility means that he sometimes learns incorrect facts.
The key point is that Finn is compassionate to a fault. He’s willing to take people at face value no matter how many times that’s been the completely wrong decision. It’s easy for him to see other people’s perspectives, and unless it’s fundamentally immoral he can almost always sympathize. This makes him understanding even of his less-evil enemies. The Lich is of course the definition of absolute evil and cannot be sympathized with under any means. Compared to that people are, as a whole, generally good.
He can also be very sentimental. He keeps items from his past and holds them very dear. His baby teeth, for instance, he kept in a small box and was heartbroken when they were stolen. If this sounds a lot like hoarding, that’s because it is. He is, as he puts it, a scavenger. The entire first floor of the treehouse is the ‘treasure room’, where he and Jake keep random objects from their adventures alongside fortunes in gold, gems and useable coins. They almost never actually spend any of their loot, but gather it in a comically large pile.
He’s definitely an “energetic little boy” and can often be seen running around and doing gymnastics totally unnecessarily. On occasion this behavior is even accompanied by constant noise and/or his own sound effects. It’s interesting to note that while he can be very gymnastic, capable of handsprings and high jumps with little apparent effort, he cannot do parkour. He has attempted it! It was sad. Physically activity isn’t the only outlet for his energy, though, as he often does purposeful activities for no reason other than their own sake. For example, he greatly enjoys throwing parties, exploring dungeons and playing made-up games.
He has an easy sense of humor, which is to say that you don’t have to be particularly funny to make him laugh and it’s always genuine. One thing he particularly enjoys is playing pranks on people, though he can turn just about anything into a game. In fact, he almost always seems to be having fun no matter what he’s doing. A fair amount of that little-boy energy is spent making up rhymes, singing, rapping, beat-boxing and improvising instruments from whatever is lying around. Generally speaking he is unashamed, outrageous and irrepressible.
Items: Just his clothes.
Powers/skills: Finn has a number of skills picked up over the years. In particular he's good with swords, and astoundingly resilient. His tolerance for pain is incredible and he's seen ignoring injuries up to and including broken bones on a pretty regular basis. Thanks to a magic potion he's immune to electricity. He also seems to have vague spiritual powers which allow him to do such things as summon astral beasts (His is butterflies. Actually his whole symbol-animal is a butterfly.), temporarily resist psychic attack and regain knowledge from his past lives while under hypnosis. He also has a robotic right arm, but it's unclear if this really qualifies as a power.
